what is Aphthous Ulcer?
Aphthous ulcer also known as canker sores or Aphthous stomatitis. These are one of the most commonest problem that affects the mouth.
Aphthous ulcers are small, painful ulcers located on the inside of the mouth, lips, or throat. They usually last for 10 to 14 days and also heal without leaving a scar.
Many patients observe recurrent episodes of Aphthous ulcers.
How can it be Diagnosed?
Diagnosis of Aphthous ulcer is based on clinical symptoms and medical history of the patient. Your doctor may perform a physical examination.
If required your doctor may advise further tests to rule out the other conditions such as:
1)Biopsy
2) Blood culture or test to rule out other systemic illnesses.
what Causes Aphthous ulcers?
The cause of recurrent aphthous ulcers remain unknown however it is believed to be the overreaction of the immunse system.

What are the Symptoms of Aphthous ulcers?
Aphthous ulcers can appear in different sizes affecting inner surface of cheeks, lips or under the tongue.
It has raised, yelloowish-white border surrounded by a red border with open shallow grayish sore.
Many patients observe recurrent ulcers 2 to 3 times in a year or one after another. First few days after appearance of such ulcers is painful after 3 to 4 days it starts to heal.
Minor sores may last for 10-14 days. They often heal without leaving a scar. Major sores can last for several weeks or even months. They may even leave a scar after they heal.
Burning or tingling sensation
general discomfort
less common symptoms are fever or swelling of lymph nodes.
Treatment of Aphthous Ulcer
Usually Aphthous ulcer heal within 1 to 2 weeks and may not require treatment.
If the ulcers take long time to heal or painful in conventional medicines following are prescribed
1) oral pain relieving rinses or gel
2) Antibiotic rinse
3) local steroids
Self Help:
1) Chew food properly and prevent biting tongue or cheek
2) Avoid acidic foods such as tomatoes, pineapples
3) Include food rich in iron, vitamin B12, or folic acid in your diet
4) Maintain good oral hygiene
5) Avoid tobacco and alcohol
6) Avoid spicy and hot food
