What is conjunctivitis?
Conjunctivitis is the inflammation of the conjunctiva which is a thin transparent membrane covering the white part of an eye and inside of an eyelids. It is also known as “Pink eye”.
Precautions to be taken during conjunctivitis:
1. Do not share your towel, handkerchief and sun glasses.
2. Wash your eyes frequently with plain water.
3. Don’t wear contact lenses during conjunctivitis.
4. Avoid eye makeup.
5. Use handkerchief while coughing and sneezing.
6. Avoid eye irritants such as smoke, dirt, pool water etc.
7. Do not rub your infected eye.
8. Wash your hand frequently with soap.
9. Avoid going to school, office or any public area.
Causes of conjunctivitis:
1. Bacteria
2. Viruses
3. Allergies (pollen and dust) usually recurrent in nature.
4. Irritants (smoke, shampoo, swimming pool water).
Symptoms of conjunctivitis:
1. Redness of the eyes
2. Itching
3. Burning sensation in the eyes
4. Watery discharge or thick yellowish green discharge from the eyes which makes crust on eyelids and may prevent opening of the eye in morning after sleep.
5. Gritty sensation in the eyes
6. Intolerance of the light
7. Blurred vision
Conventional treatment for the conjunctivitis:
Antibiotics eye drops and ointments are mainly prescribed for the conjunctivitis which is caused by bacteria and viruses. For allergy related conjunctivitis antihistamines are given.
