What is Ganglion
It is a small soft painless tissue swelling often seen at the back of wrist joint.
It is also called as synovial cyst. Basically it is a bag formed due to leakage of lubricating fluid present in the joint. It is also found in foot.
It is a non cancerous, benign growth.
Cause
Repeated mechanical stress, trauma to joint. Generaly seen in females, teenagers and young adults. In some cases rheumatoid arthritis has been found to be associated with ganglion formation.
It can be an occupational hazard. Those professions which includes more use of certain joints like wrist or fingers may have more number of patients.
Symptoms
These are painless soft, 2-5 cms in size swelling. On progression there can be pain felt as the swelling may compresses nerves beneath.
The size of ganglion cyst may increase after strenuous activity. Common site of formation is wrist joint. Less commonly seen in fingers, knee, and shoulder joints.
Some cases may see symptoms like restriction of movement in joints, tingling and numbness, pain while making movements at joints etc.
Complication
If the swelling progresses, it may compress the nerve around it which may cause tingling and numbness.
