Hairloss is also known as alopecia. Hairloss can be seen on scalp or all over the body. On an average a human head contain 100,000 to 150,000 hairs. Falling of 50-100 hair strands per day is considered to be normal.
Types of Hairloss:
Androgenic alopecia- It is a hereditary condition which affects both men and women. It is of two types:
a) Male pattern baldness (MPB)- it is seen in men where hairloss is seen at the crown or forehead with receding hairlines which resembles the letter “M”
b) Female pattern baldness(FPB)- it is seen in females where thinning of the hairs is seen at the crown or nearby hair partition area.
Telogen Effluvium- It is temporary loss of hair mainly seen on scalp after some acute illnesses.
Trichotillomania- It is psychological disorder in which a person pulls out own hairs.
Alopecia Areata- It is a patchy hair loss seen on scalp and beard area. When hairloss is seen on whole body then it is known as Alopecia Universalis or Alopecia Totalis.
Causes of Hairloss:
Hereditary
Stress
Thyroid disorder
Nutritional deficiency
Aneamia
Scalp infection- Seborroiec dermatitis, scalp psoriasis, ringworm infection
Alopecia areata
Hair treatment- excessive use of hair color and chemical treatment such as straightening, perming etc.
Certain drugs- drugs for hypertension, cancer, arthritis, depression.

1) Do not comb your hair when it is wet.
2) Do not wipe hair vigorously with towel.

4) Gently massage your scalp with finger tips for 10-15 min while applying non medicated hair oil. It increases the blood circulation of your scalp, strengthens hair root and prevent hair fall. Do it 2-3 times in a week.
5) Choose shampoo as per your hair type. Dry hair requires wash twice a week and conditioner is must while oily hair require alternate day wash.
6) Avoid using hair dryers, styling gels frequently as it may increase hair fall
7) Avoid tight hairstyle such braids, ponytails
Diet for Hairloss:
1) Eat protein rich food such as milk, pulses, sprouts, eggs, chicken, fish, mutton etc. as hair is made of protein.
2) Eat flaxseed one spoon daily. It is a source of omega 3 fatty acid.
3) Eat 1-2 Almonds a day which is a source of Vitamin E which helps strengthening hair roots.
4) Eat any one fruit per day.
5) Water intake should be minimum 8-10 glasses a day.
6) If hairloss is due to anaemia then eat iron rich diet such as dates, jaggery, ragi, spinach etc
