What is psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a chronic, relapsing, Auto-immune skin disease characterized by itching skin lesions/rashes which could be red, dry/scaly, or papule type. It can be a small patch over a particular area or can cover the whole body. It is a non-contagious skin disease.
In Psoriasis, there is an abnormal production of skin cells. In every 4-5 days, skin cells are replaced in Psoriasis than the usual 28-30 days. This overgrowth of the skin cells result in thickening of skin surface which appears red, dry, silvery scales.
Complications of Psoriasis:
Nail Psoriasis– Psoriasis can affect the nails. Nails can appear pitting type. Whitening or yellow discoloration of the nails. There could be thickening of the skin under nails. Separation of the nails.
Psoriatic arthritis type has pitted nails, painful and swollen joints. There may have a normal stiffness to permanent deformity of the joints.
Types of Psoriasis:
There are many types of psoriasis recognized.
Plaque Psoriasis– Plaque type is the commonest type which looks red and dry scaly patch over the skin surface. Mostly it covers elbows, knees but can occur on any part of the body right from head to toe. This type is triggered by stress, and withdrawal of a systemic corticosteroid.
Pustular Psoriasis– Pustular type is the red raised eruptions which are tender/painful. This type is often triggered by the infection, pregnancy, sudden withdrawal of topical corticosteroid, complication of plaque type may lead to pustular type.
Guttate Psoriasis-Guttate type is the red, scaly, papule type lesions. These cover the large area of the body which includes- trunk, limbs. This type is triggered by the bacterial infection.
Inverse psoriasis– Inverse type appears as red/inflamed patch of skin. These are commonly seen over the folded areas of the body, like armpits, between the thighs, between the buttocks, and under the breast. This type is triggered by the infection and the heat.
Erythrodermic Psoriasis– Erythrodermic type appears inflamed and exfoliated skin over most of the body surface. It is associated with itching, inflammation, and pain. This type is mostly triggered by the sudden withdrawal of systemic glucocorticoids.
Causes of Psoriasis:
1. The causes of Psoriasis are not fully known, but it is considered as Genetic disease. The known cause for the development of the Psoriasis, when there is a malfunction of the immune-system which mistakes a normal skin cell as pathogen, and sends out wrong alarm that leads to overproduction of new skin cells. Thus leads to thickening of skin & excessive shedding of the scales.
2. Mental stress.
3. Obesity.
4. Changes in weather- Cold weather- the onset of winters, there could be a relapse of psoriasis. Hot weather- Excessive sunlight may trigger the condition.
5. Dryness of skin.
6. Excessive alcohol consumption and cigarette smoking.
6. Drug-induced Psoriasis. Withdrawal of certain medications can increase the chance of Psoriasis.
Symptoms of Psoriaisis:
1. Silvery dry scales over the body.
2. Itching.
3. Redness.
4. Tenderness.
Prevention or food restrictions:
There are no such food restrictions, but to avoid alcohol consumption and some people are sensitive to Gluten- protein found in wheat, barley which may trigger Psoriasis so this should be avoided.
There is a gluten-sensitivity test which can rule out this condition.
Conventional Treatment:
1. Topical treatment.
2. Phototherapy.
3. Systemic therapies which include oral medications and injections.
