CORNS
What are corns?
Corns are small patch
of thickened skin with or without pain commonly seen in areas exposed to
repeated friction and/or pressure, like hands and feet. These
are also known as callosities or clavus. Corns are collection of dead skin
cells which have a very hard centre. Corns often occur on bony prominence of
hands and feet such as tops or sides of toe as there's a lack of natural
cushion.
There are high chances
of reoccurrence.
Types of corns
Hard corn (Heloma Durum) – It is a small area of
thickened skin with elevated centre. Located generally on bony prominence e.g.
tops and outside of toes and sole of foot.
Soft corn (Heloma
Molle) – It is a lump of
inflamed skin with smooth whitish center. It generally observed between the
toes.
Seed corn – It is less
common variety of corn, usually painful, found on weight bearing parts of soles.
Causes of corns
The risk factors
causing development of corns are
1) Wearing ill fitting (Too tight causing pressure or too loose
causing rubbing or friction)
2) High heels shoes
3) Wearing shoes without socks
4) Walking Bare feet regularly may cause thickening of skin as a
part of body’s protective mechanism
5) Writers are prone to have corns on the middle finger.
6) Weight lifters are prone to corns of the palm.
7) Age factor : As we grow older, our skin gets thinner with less
fat padding on the soles of our feet
8) Gender: Corns on feet are more common in women than men
People in Occupations
like hair-dressers, carpentry, jewelry making etc. have more chances of
corns/callosities as their skin is in repeated pressure/friction.
Some medical
conditions with tendencies of corns are Diabetes, Rheumatoid arthritis,
Overweight/obesity, syphilis
Symptoms of corns

and rough area of skin.
Flaky and dry or waxy

2) X ray to rule out bony abnormalities.
3) Skin biopsy can be done in rare case.
